that's what the aussie said to me yesterday. they called australia's national day "Australia Day", so i suppose they arent wrong from their perspective to call ours "Singapore Day".
past 2 years, my friends and i had tried catching the NPD on the internet. but the slow connection in academy resulted in futile attempts. this year, having made some friends from ANU, we finally managed to catch the parade. SSA of ANU had one of the few dedicated bandwidth, so they were able to screen the NPD live without any trouble with the connection.
just as what many would have said or notice: the parade is getting grander each year. with the parade on a floating pontoon this year, i couldnt help but wonder where the next one would be? or what interesting performances would be added to match the scale or outshine it?
i didnt catch the whole show -just bits in the middle and the finale- so maybe it wouldnt be very fair to say that i only liked the finale, with all the fireworks and singing of classical national day songs.
there were a lot of new songs in the middle bit. frankly speaking, i dont at all enjoy listening to all these new songs. i cant figure out what they were trying to convey without the help of the subtitles (or maybe bcos the sound quality was poor). they were just not catchy enough. and who are those singers? i only recognised a few... who are the rest? and what is that mascot? prawn, lobster or crab?
to me, it was quite boring well until they bring in the familiar songs like count on me, one peolpe one nation... the lecture theatre got more lively too, with many people started singing along. do the kids in primary school now still know these classics, i wonder? or are they more into the new-age type?
or maybe it's time to admit that there's a huge generation gap between us and the kids from the 90s. i havent have any friend born in the 90s yet. it would be interesting to know one.
